Sirens and Children

Walking down a residential area, I ran into the sound of a siren mixed with the sounds of children. Seemed like an appropriate thing to record. Life is full of contrast.

Conversations of Birds

This recording was also from Washington park. I stood near the lake in the park and recorded the geese in the water conversing with the geese on the shore. I think they were talking about how much of a dick I was for not throwing them bread. I'm not sure though... you'll have to figure it out for yourself.

Metal Microphones

I found a piece of metal in the road while walking across a bridge, and decided to utilize it as a tool for collecting sound. I connected my microphones up to either side of it and threw it back out into the middle of the road. It very well could have been the end of my mics, but I was kind of bored, and desperate.

Symphany of Weeds

I recorded this while I was walking through Washington Park. As I had my microphones clipped to my sweatshirt, the left one fell off, and started dragging against the ground. Interested in the sound it made, I experimented with it more, dropping the other one and dragging it. I feel like the stereo microphones are performing some kind of symphony, with the sounds of sirens, nature, and ambiant noise in the background. It's kind of beautiful, in its own god-awful annoying way. I don't think Mozart would be impressed... but I think John Cage might.

The soundbite also fades in from the end point of my singing. Yeah... I don't think I'm goona post that the first part of that.

Hundred Geese in Flight

My route eventually led me into a park where a path slowly dwindled away into nothing, leaving me to either turn around and continue the strict equation or to throw the equation out the window and record the hundreds of geese that seemed to infect this park. I chose to record the sounds of 100 geese in flight.

Strategy of Sound Drift

Inspired by the culture and sounds of Milwaukee, I have come up with a plan to experience both and record my experience. Being new to Milwaukee, I have not been able to experience much more than the travel between my home on Brady Street and the UWM campus. In order to get out and experience a new part of town, I biked west on North Avenue until the number's got high and locked my bike up on the corner of 42nd and North. From there I took out my homemade microphones from my backpack, got out my map and made sure I knew where I was at, and starting walking in a strict pattern, attentively listening for sounds to record. The pattern I walked was simple:

Straight - Left - Right - Straight - Right - Left

If I came to a dead-end, I turned around and continued where I left off. The results led to mostly boredom and noises of semi-trucks, but my route occasionally led me to an interesting and sometimes captivating sound to record. In this blog I record my results.

If you are hear to listen to these sounds, enjoy. If you are here to critique these sounds, please, dear god, wear some good headphones and have an open mind. I'm trying to recreate the sounds of the city in a different context then they are normally heard. So turn off your I-tunes and listen.
